No. The training will teach you all you need to know and prepare you with all the materials you need to be a successful tutor.

New tutors start with a student in grades 1-3 who qualifies for free or reduced-cost lunch and is below grade level performance in reading, writing, or spelling.

Tutors meet with students twice a week during school hours at their student’s assigned school.  Augustine Literacy Project is partnered with all the elementary schools in Transylvania County (Rosman Elementary, Brevard Elementary, TC Henderson Elementary, Pisgah Forest Elementary, and Brevard Academy).

Volunteers commit to deliver 60 free lessons to a qualified Augustine student. This is typically two lessons per week during the school year. In addition, it takes approximately two hours of lesson planning per week.

Augustine tutors receive a preliminary fifty-hour training and practicum targeted to meet the needs of beginning readers. Classes meet Tuesday-Friday the first two weeks of September from 8:30-4:30 each day.

An optional four-day advanced training is offered after the completion of the first year of tutoring. The advanced training prepares tutors to meet the reading needs of students in grades 3-12.

  • September 15th-June 30th is priority registration for Transylvania County residents seeking to become Augustine volunteers.
  • June 30th-July 31st is open registration.
  • A 50% down payment is required at the time of registration. If you register and are unable to take the training, you can receive your full deposit back up to July 31st.

Individuals seeking to become volunteer Augustine tutors in Transylvania County. This includes Transylvania County homeschool parents whose children meet the eligibility requirements for NC free or reduced-cost lunch.

Transylvania County educators, including homeschool parents and non-Transylvania County volunteers and educators can take the training provided there are training slots available after priority registration.

Training Costs

The total cost to train one Augustine tutor is approximately $1,000. Generous grantors and donors assist Augustine Literacy Project in covering the majority of the expenses associated with the training. Reduced fees are requested from Transylvania County Augustine trainees to cover a portion of the costs of the literacy materials they keep post-training.

Provided availability, non-Transylvania County educators and volunteers can take the training at the full cost of training one trainee.

Yes! Once you begin your tutoring sessions, a tutor-coach will join you for a minimum of two tutoring sessions to observe your lessons and give feedback. We also encourage you to contact your tutor-coach with any questions along the way.  Additionally,  we host tutors' meetings every 4-6 weeks to answer questions, share successes, review tutoring skills, and learn new techniques. Our job is not only to train tutors but to support them in becoming the best tutors possible.
